Having beaten Blowich in the quarter finals 3-0, the ladies drew Sonning at home in the semi final match. Knowing little about them beyond the fact they were a free scoring team near the top of their respective league, the Formby players knew it wouldn't be a straight forward affair.
The sun was shining, the breeze was light and the scene was set for the toughest match of the season so far.
Sonning were fast out of the traps and immediately started to pressure the Formby players, their high press caused a little panic initially as the home team struggled to get the ball to the midfield and forward lines.
It was following one such period of pressure that Sonning took the lead through a well finished short corner. Formby didn't lay down, however, and promptly rallied to win a penalty stroke which was tucked away by Becca Dunne.
Sonning took the lead once more towards the end of the first half only for Nicole Roberts to peg them back once more with a dazzling run and reverse stick finish.
The second half was a much more cagey affair with chances few and far between. Sonning had the majority of the play but only managed two clear goal scoring opportunities, one was saved on the line by the ever vigilant Roberts whilst the home goal keeper, Jasmine Price, made a crucial save on the second. The game finished at 2-2 and so it was the dreaded penalty shoot out.
Without naming names of those that scored or missed, Formby HC won 3-2 on strokes with Jasmine making an outstanding save to seal victory. All 5 stroke takers, whether they scored or not, were heroes to the rest of the team, as of course was Jasmine!
The victory sealed Formby's place in the final, which is being held on the 30th April at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Having already gained league promotion and reached the final of the Lancashire Hockey League Cup final, this could turn out to be a magnificent season.
Having friends, parents and club member support for the semi final was greatly appreciated by the whole team. If you're free on the 30th, how about a trip to London? Tickets available here.
