A mature band of hockey players at Formby have formed a friendly, informal group known as the Vixens. The women meet for training every Thursday night from 7pm to 8pm – all year round, in and out of the season – and always welcome new members.
Players may not have picked up a stick before, or may not have played for 30 years – but all are made to feel very welcome, with several Vixens rediscovering their love of the sport in their sixties.
Led by coach Vicki Haselhurst, the Vixens have gone from strength to strength since they started with just a couple of women, in 2003. There are now around 50 women signed up as ‘Vixens’, of whom around 20 have moved into the club’s League teams.
Because of the influx of new members via the Vixens, a ladies 4th team was established in 2004; and in 2009 a ladies 5th team joined the League. These teams include youngsters new to club hockey as well as the more mature players; and there are several mother and daughter combinations.
Formby Vixens are at Formby Hockey Club, Cricket Path, Freshfield. Anyone interested in joining can simply turn up any Thursday at 7pm.
